Coffee is the most diverse, interesting and challenging commodity to trade in the world. We are all very fortunate to be involved in this fascinating business. However, to provide that perfect cup of coffee can sometimes be a difficult task. All of the participants in the supply chain, from the farmer to the retailer, are continually exposed to a shifting horizon due to ever changing market factors such as weather, politics, logistics, macro and micro-economics and government regulations. It is our role in the supply chain to make the delivery of the right quality coffee to our customers as easy and timely as possible.

It stands to reason that a small business focused on the service of importing coffee is going to be very hands-on. We’ve learned a few things over the years of our business, and one of the most important is that our day-to-day work has the capability to touch a lot of people’s lives for the better. Farmers, millers, exporters, shippers, roasters, everyone involved-we take the relationship we have with each of these characters seriously and aim to leave every partner and potential partner satisfied that they made the right choice to work with Cafe Imports.

ABOUT CAPE HORN COFFEES Founded in 1995, Cape Horn Coffees, Inc. (“CHC”) is an importer and wholesaler of green (unroasted) coffee into North America. We trade all origins of coffee, with a focus on Brazil and Central America. CHC’s owners come from very different backgrounds within coffee, giving us an entirely unique perspective on the industry. Paul Leighton founded Cape Horn in 1995 after 15 years of co-owning and operating the Coffee Corner, a small but successful coffee roaster in Eugene, OR. Paul used his roasting insights to begin to supply green coffee to other roasting companies in the Pacific Northwest, and CHC was born. Today, CHC imports and supplies green coffee to roasters throughout North America. CHC’s philosophy is to always put the customer’s best interests first. We never push a particular grade or origin, but rather take the time to learn our customer’s profiles and end-market so that we can provide relevant advice and source the best value coffees for each customer’s particular needs. CHC is owned by three partners with very different backgrounds within coffee. Our diverse backgrounds in farming, roasting, trading, and finance give us unique insight into the issues that roasting companies face, which go […]

What We Do We offer the unique opportunity to access an unparalleled range of specialty coffee, priced and categorized according to cupping score – and still make an impact at origin. Our business was founded to bridge the gap between specialty coffee roasters and quality focussed small-holder farmers in Latin America. Our business was founded in 2000 specifically to bridge the gap between Latin American farmers and the rest of the world – hence our name. Back then we also thought that quality coffee must have to come from larger farms with more money to invest. However, as we ventured into sourcing the coffee direct from origin we soon realized it didn’t have to be that way. In fact, the best qualities were being produced by small, unknown farmers.

history Cooperative Coffees is a green coffee importing cooperative committed to supporting and partnering with small-scale coffee farmers and their exporting cooperatives. By importing directly from our partner-farmers, we do business in a way that creates a fairer, more transparent and sustainable system of coffee trade that directly benefits farmers, and their families and communities. Coop Coffees’ story began in 1997, when founder Bill Harris – inspired by his encounter with a Guatemalan coffee coop on a Habitat for Humanity delegation – decided to start up a roasting company that would import and roast fairly traded coffee beans from Central America. By 1998, Cafe Campesino, the roasting company, imported one full container – approximately 40,000 pounds of coffee. Needless to say, they were up to their ears in green coffee that would have taken them years to go through themselves. So Bill planned a road trip to scour the eastern seaboard and across the mid-western states, looking for value-driven roasters interested in investing in a collective coffee importing venture. In 1999, seven roasters met in Atlanta and officially formed Cooperative Coffees. In 2009, 10 years down the road, the cooperative had grown to include 23 roasters who spanned the continent […]

OUR MISSION Equal Exchange’s mission is to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the contribution of worker co-operatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world. OUR STORY Equal Exchange started with an idea: what if food could be traded in a way that is honest and fair, a way that empowers both farmers and consumers? Our founders – Rink Dickinson, Jonathan Rosenthal and Michael Rozyne – asked this question as they envisioned a trade model that values ?each part of the supply chain?. So they took a big risk and plunged full-force into changing a broken food system. In 1986, they started with fairly traded coffee from Nicaragua and didn’t look back?. Read more of our story > ?Three decades later (and with several product lines in the mix), we still face vast challenges. Consumers have been overloaded with labels and certifications, while the Fair Trade movement has been watered down in favor of corporate interests. The whole food industry has continued to consolidate into the hands of just a few big players, allowing concentrated power […]
